SANTA CRUZ >> Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom challenged 280 people from Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito counties at the first “State of the Region” conference at Chaminade on Wednesday.
“I hope you think differently,” he said, repeating Plutarch’s warning 2000 years ago that the imbalance between rich and poor is the “oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics.”
With 40 percent of those born in poverty in America staying in poverty, “this is the issue of our time,” he said. “We’re all stuck in this traffic.”
